I am 58 years old and didn’t experience eczema till my 40’s. I acquired HIV when I turned 50, Whereupon my eczema has become intractable. I became addicted to topical steroids and was hospitalized with an excruciating withdrawal, I moved from Los Angeles to Florida where I saw about a 20 percent improvement. I swim about thirty minutes a day in the ocean, The salt water stings for the first fifteen minutes but I feel a calming sensation for a couple hours afterwards. I believe the humidity and salt water knocks down the symptoms but I am still experiencing intractable itching 24/7.
I was reading a book that stating that night shade plants such as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants promote inflammation and should be eliminated from the diet of psoriasis sufferers. Do you believe that patients suffering from Eczema would benefit from night shades as well?

I developed severe itching randomly late in my third trimester. The more I scratched an itch, the worse the itch got and a rash would break out. I told my OBGYN about this… and he just blamed it on pregnancy hormones and said it would go away after having my baby. I am now 5 weeks postpartum, and the itching as not stopped. Sometimes its worse. Thanks so much for posting this! I had a sneaking suspicion that it could be eczema but didn’t know if the pregnancy could have caused it or how common it was. Ive only been able to narrow my triggers down to getting hot and sweaty.

Phototherapy or light treatment is an effective treatment for eczema. With phototherapy, various wavelengths of sunlight (UVB, UVA, combined UVA/UVB, UVA1, or narrow-band) are administered in a unit that is similar to a telephone booth but which is lined by fluorescent appearing light bulbs. The type of phototherapy that you will receive will be determined by your dermatologist. It is usually administered twice weekly. Possible side effects of phototherapy are redness, sunburn, or dryness. Long-term side effects, which are more likely with white skin, are possible skin cancers and enhanced aging.
