Signs of low estrogen steroids

Estrogen dominance causes PMS, which in turn is caused by low progesterone levels in comparison to estrogen in the body. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the most common complaint among women.  In the 1930s, PMS was described as a “state of unbearable tension”, and was likely written by a man who had never experienced it first hand. 7  Some women have PMS from the beginning of their menstrual cycles, but most women do not develop it until their mid-thirties when hormone levels start to fluctuate. Many of the most common PMS symptoms coincide with symptoms of progesterone deficiency and can include joint pain, water retention, breast tenderness, headaches, mood swings, and poor sleep patterns.

When your hormones are perfectly balanced, your body works just as it should. But when your hormone levels are off, things can go a little haywire. Estrogen, known as the female hormone, helps regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle and plays a role in the entire reproductive system. When your estrogen levels are too high, you can start experiencing symptoms of estrogen dominance . Too much estrogen can be caused by medication, weight loss, high blood pressure, diabetes, pregnancy… the list goes on. Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of estrogen dominance can help you get your hormones back on track.

A study published by the University of California Santa Barbra found that estrogen and progesterone are the main hormones that influence sex drive in women. The study found that when progesterone levels were higher, sex drive was lower. The researchers found that in the days prior to ovulation, progesterone was at its lowest and libido was higher. However, after ovulation, as progesterone levels increased, sex drive decreased. The researchers concluded that higher levels of progesterone “appear to act as an inhibitory signal for sexual motivation.” 13
